City Manager Announces Plans for Departure

City Manager Martin Casey today announced plans to conclude his service to the City of Sunnyside effective August 15, 2021.

“Navigating the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic has prompted many to reflect on their goals and values,” Mr. Casey observed. “My family has been no different. After careful thought, we have decided to step back and consider where our best future lies.”

Mayor Francisco Guerrero stated, “I’m really proud of Mr. Casey’s leadership and achievements for the City and appreciate his contributions to the community. I am hopeful we can bring on a strong successor who will continue our progress as we emerge together from the pandemic.”

Mr. Casey added, “I have been very grateful for the privilege of serving as Sunnyside City Manager and for leading a remarkable team. Through the combined efforts of Council and staff, Sunnyside has made significant progress. I am proud to have helped stabilize city finances and strengthen professional administration.”

Council selected Mr. Casey as City Manager in October 2018, and he began serving in January 2019. Since then, Sunnyside brought all budget funds into balance and earned a “clean” state audit for the first time in a decade. The City received 52% voter approval to fund its Transportation Benefit District to support street infrastructure projects over the next ten years. Sunnyside attained the longest period (24+ months) without a homicide in a decade and enhanced staffing and equipment for Fire/EMS services. The City also began work on updating its overdue Comprehensive Plan. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the City sustained essential public services with no layoffs, provided more than 55,000 masks to residents, and distributed nearly a quarter-million dollars in CARES Act aid to local businesses.

Council will take up discussions on possible approaches for selecting a successor at upcoming meetings over the summer.
