Current Requirements for Recruits

Applicant must:

• Be a minimum of 18 years of age
• Complete an application
• Pass a background check
• Posses a valid Washington State Driver’s License
• Have a good driving record
• Pass a physical ability test
• Pass the city medical examination and hearing test
• Be tested for tuberculosis
• Complete a 12-week recruit class (approx. 220 hrs) or Sunnyside Fire Department Rookie Task book
• Complete Emergency Vehicle Incident Prevention training and driving course
• Pass an equipment location test
• Emergency Medical Technician Training may be offered at the completion of rookie task book
• Advanced First Aid training will be provided

Recruits are offered an optional hepatitis B vaccination.
